When educators around the state talk about effective reading programs, attention turns to Bridgeport Elementary School . The Bridgeport K-3 Reading First Team consists of two reading coaches ( Amy Porter and Kathy Myers ), Principal Steve Pointer, 13 K-3 classroom teachers and 5 Para-educators. This team changed the culture of reading in the Bridgeport Elementary School . In the process, they demonstrated that all students can advance towards reading mastery.

• Students benchmarked three times a year
•  Students in intensive (lowest level) benchmarked every two weeks
•  Reading coaches in the classroom demonstrating and observing best practice
•  Para-educator time focused on reading groups
•  Thousands of hours of professional development in reading strategies

•  Staff buy-in to reading system that is in place
•  Dramatic reduction in the number of students at-risk in reading

Bridgeport Elementary K-3 reading program has garnered a statewide reputation for high quality instruction. Bridgeport Elementary staff proves daily that a strong focus on reading generates incredible gains in student performance.

Outstanding Young Educator Award

Michael Porter is one of the central leaders of Bridgeport School District . His insights, professionalism, and charisma have helped the staff at Bridgeport Elementary School move forward in several positive directions. Under his influence, test scores—as well as school climate—have increased dramatically. Michael's total effect on Bridgeport Elementary School cannot be completely captured in words; however, the following is a partial listing of his accomplishments and efforts since he began working here in 1994.

  • Received the Washington Award for Excellence in Education in 1998. As winner of this award, Michael went to Olympia to meet with the Governor and Superintendent of Public Instruction. He was also awarded $2500 for school use—with this money he generously purchased hardware for several classrooms to increase access to a central printer.
  • In 2001-2004, Michael served as the 3-6 “Reading Switch” Coordinator. Reading Switch became the school's name for the “Walk to Read,” ability-grouped placement of students into various reading groups. He organized all details, meetings, student placement, and coordinated the efforts of all reading instruction 3-6.
  • After hearing that the newly-developed Bridges Math curriculum was particularly good, Michael, in 2004, spearheaded the inclusion of this program into our school. He contacted the Math Learning Center ( Oregon ) and volunteered Bridgeport Elementary School 4 th and 5 th grade as a pilot school for this project.
  • Michael is actively pursuing National Board certification (hopes to be certified in 2007). He is the first teacher in the district to seek such distinguished recognition. He is proud of his learning, and has refined many areas of his teaching techniques. He hopes to encourage other teachers to go through the same process, and eventually, others will follow his lead.

Mr. Porter will attend the WSASCD luncheon in Spokane on November 3rd.

Bridgeport Elementary Receives $15,000 Academic Achievement Award

Bridgeport Elementary received notice that they were one of six schools to receive the 2004 Washington State Academic Achievement Award. This award brings along with it a check for $15,000 to be used toward professional development. The Washington State Academic Achievement Award honors those schools and improvement teams that have significantly raised student achievement in mathematics and/or reading through an identifiable strategy, which can serve as a state model. The purpose of this award is to honor the work of successful Title I school teams while providing model strategies to assist other schools.

Title I Distinguished School Award honored two Title I schools in the state that exhibited exceptional student performance for two or more consecutive years and made the most progress in significantly closing the achievement gap between student groups. These two state awards are a culmination of enormous effort on the part of our students, teachers, administration, and community. “Learning is taking place in every corner of Bridgeport Elementary School ,” says Principal Scott Sattler. “Success breeds success,” as the high school receives the 2005 National Title I Distinguished School Award and the school board received the 2004 Washington State School Directors Diversity award for the second time in five years. We continue to build on our success and meet our mission to Leave No Child Behind.

Bridgeport Named 2004 WSSDA Diversity Winner

The Washington State School Directors Association and WSSDA's Diversity Advocacy Team named Bridgeport School District the 2004 Diversity Winner. The award recognizes Bridgeport for outstanding achievement in promoting diversity and multicultural education. The Migrant Education News highlighted Bridgeport as an exemplary school in its 2004 edition because of their dynamic changes in teaching methods.

School Superintendent Gene Schmidt and special program's director Mary Anton nominated the school board for the WSSDA award, Stating, “There are three kinds of school districts, those who watch things happen, those that wonder what happened, and those that make things happen.” Bridgeport made things happen. The school and community banded together and worked hard to improve the climate and culture.

Bridgeport has been very active in promoting diversity and multicultural programs. Student leadership is a strong focus. Students are active in the city council, the school board, and they travel to Olympia to meet with state legislators. The efforts of teachers and students in the classrooms were acknowledged by WSSDA. Bridgeport students have consistently achieved more than other students in the state over the past few years.

Partnerships with Mexico and colleges in the area play a big part in Bridgeport 's efforts to diversify. An exchange teacher from Mexico has helped newly arriving immigrants. Wenatchee Valley College English courses are offered to high school students, and a nursing Assistant Certificate Program will be offered soon.

Online technology has also helped the district diversify. Online courses are available to students and staff. A digital recording of Bridgeport 's Mariachi class was shown at the opening ceremony of the Bi-National Conference this past month.

Bridgeport 's success resulted in a dramatic jump in enrollment, over 80 new students enrolled in the district.

The awards will soon be presented by representatives from the WSSDA Diversity Selection Committee.

Bridgeport Elementary School Set to Receive
FREE SNACKS !!!

Olympia - October 26, 2004

Got fresh fruit and veggies? Students in 25 schools across Washington State are about to say "yes" to this question. This is because their buildings have been selected for the free fresh fruit and vegetables program, sponsored by the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction. Dr. Terry Bergeson was pleased to announce that Bridgeport Elementary School was among the 25 schools selected to participate in the new snack program.

During the afternoon, all Bridgeport K-6 students will have access to healthy fresh fruit and vegetable snacks at no cost. These snacks will be served in the elementary cafeteria during the afternoon recess.

Concerns about childhood obesity and the health and fitness level of children are key reasons the State Superintendent of Public Instruction Terry Bergeson is pleased to welcome this program in Washington.

Dr. Bergeson stated, "This is a wonderful opportunity to bring free and healthy snacks into our schools in a way that all children can benefit. Instead of paying 75 cents for a bag of chips, our kids can reach for a crisp Washington apple to satisfy their hunger and help feed their appetite for learning."

Schools will be fully reimbursed for the cost of purchasing, preparing, and distributing the fruits and vegetables. The program will run through the school year in the 25 selected schools. In the spring of 2005, OSPI will again invite all eligible districts to apply for the program for the 2005-06 school year.
