Grade Level Achievement Targets

Grade Level Achievement Targets are what students should know, understand, or be able to do at the end of the grade level.  They are the basic foundation for the next grade level and contribute to the achievement of Bridgeport's Learning Goals and the Essential Academic Learning Requirements (italicized below), the standards set by the State of Washington.  Students are tested on the Washington Assessment of Student Learning's (WASL) at grades 4, 7, and 10 to determine their progress on meeting these standards.

Kindergarten Communication

1 . The student uses listening and observation skills to gain understanding.

*Pays attention while others are talking.

Kindergarten Reading

1 . The student understands and uses different skills and strategies to read.

*Reads own first and last name.
*Names upper- and lower-case letters of the alphabet and knows their sounds.
*"Reads" picture books by using illustrations or memory.
*Reads 15 of the following 30 sight words:

2. The student reads different materials for a variety of purposes.

*Has favorite books and stories
*Shows off reading skills by reading things like road signs and food labels.

3. The Students sets goals and evaluates progress to improve reading.

*Reads independently for 5 - 10 minutes.

Examples:
Below is a sample of what a Kindergarten student is reading at the end of Kindergarten.

Dan seems sad.
Dan said, "We need Sam."
Nat seems mad.
Nat said, "Sam!
Sam, that Sam!"


Kindergarten Writing

1. The student writes clearly and effectively using traits of quality writing.

*Prints first and last name.
*Writes from left to right.
*Writes upper-case letters.
*Writes lower-case letters.
*Writes thoughts in a journal.

Examples:
Below is a sample of what a Kindergarten student is writing at the end of Kindergarten.  The passage is written exactly as a student might write it:

i lik pla with blks i lik pla with bals i lik. Jim

(Interpretation:  I like to play with blocks.  I like to play with balls.  I like Jim.)

Kindergarten Mathematics

1. Content Targets

*Identifies basic shapes.
*Recognizes numbers to 20.
*Writes numbers to 20.
*Counts out loud to 50.
*Recognizes and uses patterns.
*Sorts and groups objects .

2. Process Targets

*Expresses ideas orally, in pictures, or with objects.
*Makes and reads graphs.
*Recites the months of the week.
*Recites the month and day of birthday.
*Tells time to the hour.
*Recognizes and names coins (penny, nickel, dime).
*Explores measurement.
*Will be introduced to addition.
